The Writing Specialist, as part of the Learning Center, offers coaching (tutoring) services to students across all writing levels and disciplines.  

Tasks/Duties Performed:  The responsibilities of the position will include, but may not be limited to:


  • Work with the Coordinator to recruit, hire, supervise, provide training and professional development for peer writing academic coaches.
  • Assist in the monitoring of peer and professional writing coaches during fall and spring semesters.
  • Develop and provide writing coach training for undergraduate coaches, provide orientation to professional coaches, and supervise coaching sessions.
  • Conduct writing coaching sessions to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Oversee writing supports for first semester freshmen in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the Learning Center.
  • Develop and manage online support and resources, including synchronous and asynchronous coaching system.
  • Assist with management of the Learning Center website.
  • Assist the Coordinator in developing and performing outreach activities, including class visits, workshops, consultations with faculty, etc.
  • Possibly serve on relevant committees.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in English, Rhetoric & Composition, TESOL, or closely related discipline.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with postsecondary writing center experience who demonstrate experience in at least one of the following areas:  ESL, Basic Writing, and Developmental Education.
  • The ideal candidate will have a commitment to liberal arts education at the undergraduate level.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in English, Rhetoric & Composition, TESOL or closely related discipline
  • Experience in a postsecondary writing center.
  • Experience working with developmental writing students.
  • Experience with culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse populations of college students.  
  • Administrative experience in personnel supervision, including the training and evaluation of undergraduate student tutors.  
  • Experience with developing and implementing online learning environments.
  • Strong organization, planning, and technical skills.


Position is 10 month full time, August-June Administrative, Exempt and may require extended hours during the academic year which may include evenings and weekends. Pending final budget approval.
